Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), at the African Union Commission (AUC) has highlighted the Commission’s efforts to combat terrorism and promote democracy Commissioner Adeoye made the above statement when he addressed a press
conference on the sidelines of the 6th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Accra.
The Commissioner emphasized the need for collective action against terrorism and violent extremism, which has affected several regions. He also addressed the challenges of military rule, with six countries currently suspended from the African Union.
Ambassador Adeoye stressed the importance of entrenching democracy, promoting good governance, and empowering youth and women in political participation. He noted that the African Union has observed elections in over nine countries this year and will continue to support the institutional resilience of national election bodies.
The Commissioner also highlighted the need for early warning, mediation, and preventive diplomacy, announcing a continental early warning system review. He stressed the importance of mobilizing resources, including from the private sector, to support peace, security, and governance initiatives.
Ambassador Adeoye seized the opportunity to call for inclusive partnerships, including with media and youth, to build a greater continent that promotes African solutions to African problems.
The press conference was held on the sidelines of the 6th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, which brings together African Union officials and stakeholders to discuss key issues affecting the continent.
He also reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and governance across the continent.

major concerns, with several regions affected. The AU is building synergies to fight terrorism collectively, recognizing that security is a shared responsibility.
Democracy and good governance are also top priorities. The AU has observed elections in over nine countries this year, supporting institutional resilience and empowering youth and women in political participation.
Early warning systems are being reviewed to enhance conflict prevention and mediation. The AU is mobilizing resources, including from the private sector, to support peace and security initiatives.
Inclusive partnerships are crucial, with the media and youth playing vital roles in promoting African solutions to African problems.
As the continent strives for sustainable development, the AU’s focus on peace,
security, and governance underscores the interconnectedness of these goals. By addressing these challenges, Africa can build a brighter future for all its citizens.
