GACL-McDan Land Dispute Raises Questions of Fairness

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is under fire for its handling of a longstanding land dispute with entrepreneur McDan, who has occupied and protected airport land for 18 years.

Unlike other tenants, McDan chose not to register his claim with the Lands Commission, out of loyalty to GACL, instead negotiating directly with the original allodial owners – a move that some say reflects deep community ties and significant personal investment.

Over the years, McDan has taken extraordinary measures to secure the property, including hiring security forces for over a decade and erecting warehouses to discourage intruders.

His supporters argue that GACL’s recent demands for substantial fees, despite the businessman’s ongoing legal battles over the property, amount to a betrayal.

Critics also point to political pressure as a possible factor, suggesting that a powerful figure’s interest in the land may be driving GACL’s aggressive stance.

Meanwhile, McDan’s allies question where these political and corporate leaders were during the years he struggled to protect the land, highlighting a perceived double standard in the ongoing dispute.
