The Brahabebom New Town Landlords Association has issued a stern warning to Goldfields Ghana Limited, cautioning the mining company to comply with regulatory guidelines and community demands or face resistance. Any attempt by the company to mine in the Mantrim Pits will incur the displeasure of the community, who are more than prepared to stop the company. Addressing a press conference in Brahabebome in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, 2025, the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Emmanuel Brew Armoo, lamented that: “We are gravely concerned about the mining operations of Goldfields Ghana Limited, which have precipitated significant disturbances to our community and demonstrate a blatant disregard for regulatory frameworks.” “Despite previous directives and agreements, Goldfields has persisted in disregarding our rights and safety,” he added. Against this background, he averred that the association was demanding that Goldfields complies with the 2018 Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) report and its key recommendations, amongst which are resettle all persons within 500m of the mining area, and repair damaged houses and compensate affected community members. “We petitioned CHRAJ on 13th February 2018, and they advised Goldfields to execute partial resettlement for persons whose structures fall within 500m of the mining area,” Mr. Armoo explained. “However, Goldfields obtained approval to work 400m from our community in October 2018 but later left after community intervention. Unfortunately, they have now returned to mine less than 300m away without our knowledge,” he disclosed. Mr. Armoo assured that they will not rest until the mining company does the right thing. “As members of Wacam too, a community-based human rights and environmental mining advocacy NGO, we have become empowered on the Minerals and Mining Laws of this country, and we will not stand idly by while Goldfields disregards our rights and safety.” He, therefore, called on state regulatory bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Minerals Commission, and security agencies including the police and District Security Council (DISEC) to ensure that Goldfields complies with the law. “We entreat the media to bring this urgent matter to the attention of the powers that be, to act with a sense of urgency,” Mr. Armoo added. “Armed with knowledge and determination, we will take all necessary steps to protect our interests and ensure that our voices are heard.” “We hereby warn Goldfields Ghana Limited that the Brahabebom community will not allow them to mine in the Mantrim Pits until our demands are met,” he concluded.
