Institute of Packaging Ghana joins Global Community to Celebrate Maiden World Packaging Day

“Packaging Makes Modern Life Possible”

Today, the Institute of Packaging Ghana (IOPG), the nation’s leading professional body dedicated to promoting packaging standards and excellence, joins the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and global partners to celebrate the first-ever World Packaging Day.

World Packaging Day is a new annual international awareness day set aside by the WPO to recognize how packaging enables modern life, and how we can advance it together. The day celebrates packaging as a strategic and indispensable enabler of modern society—supporting sustainability, economic development, food protection, innovation and quality of life.

Far more than just an outer container, quality packaging serves as a critical lifeline that protects food, secures global supply chains, stimulates industrial growth, and reduces waste to support a circular economy.

World Packaging Day 2026 Themes

World Packaging Day 2026 focuses on four key themes:

1. Packaging for progress:
Improving health, safety, accessibility, and overall quality of life.

2. Packaging against food waste:
Extending shelf life, safeguarding perishable goods, and enhancing food safety.

3. Packaging and economic growth:
Supporting brands, global supply chains, e-commerce, and international trade.

4. Packaging and sustainability:
Driving circular economy solutions, eco-design, and responsible material innovation.

The day will be marked globally with events, webinars, open houses, or digital campaigns using the hashtag #WorldPackagingDay.

Ghana’s Commemoration

In Ghana, IOPG, a member of the WPO, will commemorate the day with the launch of a virtual Pan-African Knowledge-Sharing Forum themed:

“Shaping the Future of African Packaging through Innovation, Sustainability, and Intra-African Trade.”

The forum is scheduled for late September and will be hosted in collaboration with the African Packaging Organisation.

The event will highlight how strategic, innovative and responsible packaging drives modern society. Attendees will include policymakers, manufacturers, supply chain leaders, academia, and other key stakeholders dedicated to improving packaging and development standards to boost the competitiveness of Ghanaian products.
