The director general of the Ghana meteorological agency Dr Michael Mawutor Tanu has advised the general public especially users of weather reports like aircraft operators,farmers,and construction workers etc to as a matter of urgency take keen interest in the forecast of the agency to enable them avoid disasters,stressing the need that the meteorological agency will collaborate with stakeholders like the agriculture extension officer’s to build their capacity in equipping them with information about weather issues that can be of great help in their work.
Dr.Micheal Tanu said the ignorance of the public on weather related issues often results in government spending large sums of money to deal with the adverse aftermath’s.ln this regard Gmet believes that this year’s celebration would ensure that citizens are educated on the effects of of the weather conditions and how to best manage them.
The Director general made this known during a lecture as part of a week long activities marking the world meteorological day 2018 with the theme weather Ready,Climate Smart.
Speaking on the role of meteorology in the air and sea navigation industry the director in charge of forecasting and meteorology Mr Ayilari Naa Juati noted that the role of meteorology in the air and sea navigation industry is very crucial and of immense benefit to the country.He urged industry players and stakeholders to consult the meteorological agency for weather advice since they possessed the technical know how in weather predictions both for academic purposes and general applications in other to enhance their work.He also hinted that the agency has developed an application which should be patronised by user’s of weather information to enable them gain accurate weather prediction results.Mr Ayilari stressed on the need for right information and planning to enable the general public understand their services Better.He said for example that one needs to understand the weather formation,the direction from which the wind’s are coming from and what to deduce from it.
According to him different weather have different effect.For example we have high clouds,mid clouds and low clouds and each one each one of these have a different role.He however said that it is important to know weather a cloud contains ice droplets of water or if it is dry.cautioning that some clouds can be extremely dangerous such as the cumulonimbus clouds which are very high and tricky for aviation.He said if a plane cannot avoid such clouds it may encounter turbulence because of the high speed of winds within the clouds.It is therefore important that we understand the weather,because they are part and parcel of our daily lives.The world meteorological day is celebrated annually by all united Nations member states on March 23 every year.
The Ghana meteorological agency’s celebration will be commemorated on Friday with the theme “weather Ready,Climate Smart.It will also see the official opening of the central Analysis and forecast office (CAFO
