Journalist Carlos Calony has extended heartfelt appreciation to Ghanaians and the media fraternity for the overwhelming show of solidarity following his assault and brief detention by National Security operatives on July 30.
In an emotionally charged statement released Wednesday, the Multimedia Group journalist expressed deep gratitude to colleagues, friends, and well-wishers who stood by him in what he described as one of the most difficult moments of his career.
“Every call, message, and word of encouragement has been deeply moving and immensely appreciated,” Calony said, adding that the support he received reaffirmed the strength of unity within Ghana’s media landscape and civil society.
He paid glowing tribute to the Board, Management, and Staff of Multimedia Group Limited for what he described as their “swift intervention and resolute support,” which played a critical role in securing his safety and freedom.
“This is the true mark of leadership that stands firmly behind its team,” he stated. “I consider it a privilege to be part of a media family that is INDEPENDENT, FEARLESS, and CREDIBLE.”
Calony also expressed gratitude to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and various media houses across the country for their collective voice in condemning the attack. He said their response underscored a shared commitment to upholding press freedom and protecting journalists in the line of duty.
“To the larger media fraternity, thank you for rising to the occasion—not for me alone, but for the principles of free speech and democratic accountability that we all stand for,” he said.
While expressing thanks, Calony reminded the public that the assault was not just a personal attack. “It was an attack on free speech, on press freedom, and on the very principles of democracy Ghana has sworn to uphold,” he noted.
He called on authorities to act decisively to ensure justice is served and reiterated the need for stronger protections for journalists across the country.
“The military uniform represents honour, discipline, and service to the nation. We must all ensure it is not desecrated by individuals who misuse their power,” he added.
Closing his statement on a note of unity and hope, Calony thanked every Ghanaian who has spoken up, reached out, or simply stood in silent support.
“May we continue to stand together in defence of truth, justice, and freedom,” he said. “Thank you, Ghana.”
