It is a troubling picture of defiance, deception, and disregard for the rule of law, by a mother who has been appealing to public pity with conscience-soothing falsehoods in a child battle.
Karen Baaba Sam, the embattled respondent in a heated child custody case, is now facing another motion for committal for contempt of court, for not only disobeying judicial rulings but orchestrating a brazen flight from Ghana with her daughter, and instigator boyfriend, Albert Obimpeh Abedi, aka Fergi, despite the child’s name being on a no-fly list.
According to a 21-point affidavit filed in the High Court, the Family Tribunal initially granted Mr. Adjei interim custody of the child in April 2024, with Ms. Sam being granted periodic access.
But it did not take long before cracks began to show.
The mother, Mr. Adjei alleged, refused to return the child after the Christmas holidays — keeping her out of school for nearly three months. This led to contempt charges, for which Ms. Sam was convicted to a fine earlier this year.
Not even the court conviction could stop her, for despite a judicial ruling issued on June 11th, 2025, which restored custody to the father, Ms. Sam allegedly stormed the child’s school that very day and took her away before the school day ended — without permission or court leave.
What followed was a cloak-and-dagger disappearance act that stunned everyone: Karen Baaba Sam,with the help of her partner, Albert Obimpeh Abedi, boarded a Brussels Airlines flight with the child just two days later — slipping through immigration despite clear travel restrictions imposed on the minor.
“That in willful defiance of these orders, and in concert with her boyfriend, Albert Obimpeh Abedi, the respondent illegally exited the jurisdiction with the child on 13th June 2025, on Brussels Airline, circumventing Immigration systems despite the child being listed for travel restriction. Attached, marked and exhibited as A7 is copy of the flight’s manifest,” Nana Kwadjo Adjei stated in the motion, dated 9 July, 2025.
Photographs and videos allegedly capturing the mother, child, and her partner at Kotoka International Airport have been submitted to the court, along with the flight manifest.

Nana Adjei argued that Karen Baaba Sam has now twice flouted binding court orders, undermined judicial authority, violated the child’s right to education, and repeatedly demonstrated that she has no intention of submitting to lawful processes.
“That her conduct poses a serious and ongoing threat to the rule of law, the dignity of
this Honourable Court, and the best interest of the child, who has been used as a pawn
in a personal crusade against me.
That it is my respectful belief that only a custodial sentence can now vindicate the authority of this Honourable Court, deter future disobedience, and send the clearest signal that the judicial process cannot be mocked or ignored without consequence,” he prayed the court.
These acts, Nana Adjei contended, are not the product of confusion or desperation but a premeditated and contemptuous effort to thwart justice and extinguish his rights as a father through
unlawful means.
