The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority, Michael Luguje, has assured of GPHA’s commitment to ensure traditional communities around the port enjoy their due benefits from the great economic asset which is the port.
The DG of GPHA, who was speaking when an entourage of traditional authorities of the Nungua traditional area, paid a courtesy call on GPHA, said despite current challenges in stabilizing long term finances of the Port Authority, considering the Nungua Traditional area in its corporate social responsibility would always be a priority of GPHA.
“The kind of benefits the traditional council of Nungua would enjoy from the Port expansion is the same benefits GPHA has continued to provide in its Corporate Social Responsibility project,” he stated.
The Paramount Chief of Nungua, Nii Odaifio Welentsi III, on his visit called for more recognition of Nungua in port development plans, since the Port is being developed more and more into his territory.
“The size of the old Tema Harbor is less than what we have now. The current port expansion falls within our jurisdiction and if Nungua’s name could be incorporated into the name of the port, we would be glad,” he requested.
The Nungua Chief requested GPHA’s support in providing some social infrastructures to improve the lives of the people of Nungua.
“A research is being conducted by professionals we have contacted, who are looking for where we can helped by the Port to develop our society,” he revealed.
The DG of GPHA expressed GPHA’s intention to come to the aid of the community, and called for continuous collaboration from the traditional authorities and his outfit towards the development of society.
