In a rare and deeply reflective intervention in Ghana’s evolving political conversation, Hon. Dr. Mohammed Amin Anta Adam, former Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for Karaga Constituency in the Northern Region, has spoken with measured clarity on why he believes His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remains the New Patriotic Party’s strongest candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nii Okpoti Odamtten / Muhammad Faisal Mustapha, Dr. Anta Adam situates his endorsement not in sentiment or factional loyalty, but in what he describes as a “sobering assessment of leadership competence, institutional memory, and Ghana’s economic future.” His remarks come at a time when the NPP is widely expected to undertake internal introspection following electoral cycles marked by both reform and resistance.
“Elections are not won by noise; they are won by credibility, preparation, and trust,” Dr. Anta Adam stated. “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia embodies all three.”
Dr. Anta Adam, himself an accomplished economist and public servant, frames the 2028 contest as one that will demand more than charisma. In his view, Ghana’s next political phase will require a leader who understands the complexity of modern governance particularly economic transformation in a digital and globally integrated world.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s years as Vice President offered a rare apprenticeship in statecraft, policy coordination, and reform execution.
“Dr. Bawumia is not learning on the job,” he noted. “He has already been tested at the highest level of governance, and he has emerged with a clear philosophy: reform boldly, but responsibly.”
“Ghana’s next leader must understand the economy not as theory, but as lived reality and Dr. Bawumia has consistently demonstrated that understanding.”
As a former Finance Minister, Dr. Anta Adam speaks with authority when addressing economic leadership. He credits Dr. Bawumia with championing structural reforms that sought to modernize public service delivery, strengthen financial inclusion, and leverage technology as a governance tool.
While acknowledging that no administration is without challenges, he insists that leadership should be judged by direction, intent, and capacity to adapt.
“True leadership is not the absence of difficulty,” he said, “but the courage to confront it with ideas, data, and discipline. Dr. Bawumia has consistently brought an analytical mind to political leadership.”
Beyond policy, Dr. Anta Adam emphasized Dr. Bawumia’s unique national appeal particularly his ability to connect the northern regions to the broader national political discourse while remaining relevant to younger voters.
“He represents a Ghana that is confident in its diversity and ambitious in its outlook,” he observed. “That is the kind of leadership that can unite a party and inspire a nation.”
“2028 will not be about slogans; it will be about solutions. Dr. Bawumia is a solutions driven leader.”
On the future of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Anta Adam argues that continuity, when aligned with renewal, can be a strategic advantage rather than a liability. He believes Dr. Bawumia offers the NPP an opportunity to refine its message while preserving institutional knowledge.
“The NPP must go into 2028 with humility, clarity, and competence,” he said. “Dr. Bawumia offers all three without political bitterness and without ideological confusion.”
As Ghana looks ahead to another defining electoral moment, Dr. Anta Adam’s intervention stands out for its tone calm, reasoned, and policy anchored.
“History will not ask us who shouted the loudest,” he concluded.
“It will ask whether we chose wisely. And in my considered judgment, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the right candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.”
