The Chairman of the Swedru Branch No. 5 of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr. Omar Adams has called for mechanism to be put in place to ensure that all commercial drivers join any of the transport unions, because that will ensure safety on the road.
Reacting to recent reports of increased cases of road accidents in the country, Mr. Adams hinted that evidence has shown that most of the commercial vehicles that get involve in road accidents are floating vehicles that do not belong to any of the transport unions.
He noted that all vehicles that are joined to a union are bonded by rules and regulations of the union which checks reckless driving, drunk driving, over-speeding and indecent behavior on the part of drivers against passengers.
He revealed that these rules and regulations have helped control accidents among commercial drivers belonging to a union.
He also condemned the habit of loading passengers on the shoulders of the road by floating commercial drivers in Agona Swedru, thereby creating huge traffic congestion in the town.
He described the situation as worrying, as according to him, this is done at the full glare of police Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) officers detailed to man traffic.
He noted that series of efforts have been made by the transport unions in the town to stop these drivers, but all to no avail.
