Hor Halute is definitely one of the targets for Ghana to get another medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games which comes off in October in Argentina.
After her splendid performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where she was the only Africa lady at the women’s 100 meters final, although she was 8th, she won a participation certficate and the much needed exposure to improve.
Gold Coast 2018 was Hor Halute’s first international experience and she said she never felt like a local girl or inferior, but stood shoulder to shoulder with the best of the best and they beat her with experience.
Now making times of 11:40 secs, the hope and pride of the north of Ghana has time to train to become faster and better.
Martha Bissah is the first Ghanaian to win an Olympic Gold medal in the 800 meters final at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China . She was also a Bronze medalist in the 2014 Youth Africa Games in Gaborone Botswana, and currently at Norfolk State University where she was voted Female Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row. She won the award for the first time in 2016. Martha was honoured alongside some student athletes of the Norfolk State University at the Spartan Choice Awards.
She made history by becoming the first Norfolk State runner to win a conference cross country title in 16 years.
Bissah won the MEAC cross country title in October 2017 running a record 17 minutes, 16 seconds.
She followed that by being named the MEAC Indoor Most Outstanding Women’s Runner for the second year in a row after winning four golds in February.
Outdoors, she is ranked 10th in the NCAA East Region in the 800. Due to what many people do not understand, unless the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), she has not run for Ghana.
The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is the breeding ground for future champions and Ghana’s future sports stars must be featured.
I have observed that Ghana Sports is not moving forward at all and some revolution must happen. We need selfless leaders who are ready to sacrifice like how the sportsmen and women are sacrificing on the sandy beaches and scorching sun.
We need coaches and other sports officials who are professional and ready to win medals and put the nation on the map or table.
We need sports journalists who do not just shout, talk to the hearing of politicians who are the policy makers and deciders.
We need a society that is sports conscious and believe in the sports people. I am sure after Martha Bissah, there are many others who need to be exposed.
Ghana is touted as a sports nation, and so we must be and try to be. Save Ghana Sports. The crusade is on.
