The Pediatric Unit in collaboration with the Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit of the International Maritime Hospital has marked the neonatal jaundice awareness month which is held in May worldwide.
The event was used to educate new Mothers on the causes, prevention and symptoms of neonatal jaundice which can be deadly and also cause disability in children.
Dr. Ama Benin, a Pediatrician at the International Maritime Hospital educated that, “if you have a preterm baby, that baby might get a severe form of neonatal jaundice. Also, if that baby suffers from infections or some birth injuries or when there are differences between the mother’s blood group and the baby’s, the baby may also be at risk.”
She said new Mothers should look out for when their baby’s eyes and skin become yellowish.
