The Iranian Red Crescent and the Ghana Red Cross Society are collaborating to train ten thousand (10,000) volunteers in the Greater Accra Region, in first aid services.
In view of this, the two institutions have inaugurated the First Aid Training Programme to train and equip 25 volunteers who will become trainers of trainees as the programme progresses.
At the Inaugural ceremony held at the Iran Clinic in Accra, Dr. Elahi from the Health Department of the Iranian Red Crescent there are several unforeseen natural disasters which occur on daily basis and that training such volunteers will go a long way in equipping the public with skills to manage some emergency situations.
He also averred that the training program is in the spirit of furthering the existing collaboration between the Iran and Ghana.
According to Dr. Elahi, there is the possibility that the 25 volunteers who will be trained as trainers of trainees will visit Iran to complete their training so as to be well equipped to deliver best of care and train other volunteers.
On his part, the President of the Ghana Red Cross Society, Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo enumerated that Ghana needs healthy people to be able to move to a middle income status and that the training will help create a society of strong and healthy people towards national development.
He also mentioned that First Aid services are essential tool in restoring health in emergency situation before proper medical attention is given to persons in such conditions.
He mentioned that the Ghana Red Cross Society has been very instrumental in disaster and emergency situations across the country, adding that it needs resources and human capacity to be able to continue bordering such selfless services to the nation.
Dr Richard Larweh, Chief Trainer of the volunteers said the initial training will be done within one year in Accra which is subjected to extension to other regions.
He also stressed the importance of first aid and pointed out that people should avail themselves and be trained as volunteers.
According to him if every household is equipped with at least one first aid volunteer, sudden loss of lives would be prevented.
