Kyebi Government Hospital Marks 100 Years as MP Calls for Renewed Commitment to Healthcare Delivery

The Kyebi Government Hospital has marked its centenary with a call for stronger investment, accountability, and innovation in Ghana’s healthcare system to secure the future of quality medical services.

Delivering a keynote address at the launch of the centenary celebrations, Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Kingsley Agyemang, highlighted the need to match policy ambitions with tangible improvements in healthcare delivery.

Speaking under the theme “A Century of Quality Healthcare, A Future of Hope and Excellence,” he paid tribute to Nana Sir Ofori Atta I, whose vision led to the establishment of the Kyebi Government Hospital over a century ago.

He noted that the hospital has since evolved into a vital institution that has transformed lives and strengthened communities, serving generations of patients across the Eastern Region and beyond.

Dr Agyemang, who also serves on Parliament’s Health Committee, used his personal story to underscore the importance of accessible healthcare. He revealed that he was born prematurely at the same hospital and survived due to the dedication of health professionals, describing healthcare as “the thin line between despair and possibility.”

While acknowledging progress made in expanding access to healthcare, improving public health surveillance, and investing in infrastructure, he pointed to persistent gaps between policy commitments and implementation.

“Alignment between policy and actual delivery remains uneven, with significant challenges in infrastructure expansion, service delivery, and specialised care,” he stated.

He also raised concerns about inconsistencies in funding priorities, particularly reductions in support for nursing trainees, despite overall increases in health expenditure.

The MP emphasised that the centenary celebration should not only reflect on past achievements but also serve as a call to action for stakeholders to strengthen the healthcare system.

He urged policymakers, health professionals, educators, and citizens to contribute meaningfully toward building a more resilient and equitable healthcare system.

“The future of healthcare must be shaped by deliberate action, investment in people and systems, and a shared commitment to equity and accountability,” he said.

The centenary event brought together health professionals, traditional leaders, and policymakers to celebrate the hospital’s legacy while charting a path toward improved healthcare delivery for future generations.
