Ghana’s leading telecommunications company, MTN Ghana, has extended its coverage of wireless mobile telephony to include 130 underserved and unserved communities in nine regions across the country as part of the roll out for 2017.
The regional breakdown of the new cell sites includes Ashanti – 16, Brong Ahafo – 22, Central – 24, Eastern – 16, Northern – 9, Upper East – 2, Upper West – 14, Volta – 11, Western – 16
Furthermore, an additional 185 sites are at different stages of completion and will be going live within the next three months. This is in partnership with the Ghana Infrastructure Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC). The project is aimed at extending the coverage of wireless mobile telephone services as far as possible into all areas of the country.
Through the rural telephony project, mobile telephone coverage has been extended to communities with no access to telecommunication for mobile telephony and mobile financial services.

Over the past years, MTN has more than doubled the number of Mobile Base Transceiver Stations across the country with close to 3,000 cell sites.
