Hundreds of Police officers this morning stormed the Madina-Adenta Highway, arresting pedestrians who are not using the newly constructed Footbridge at the Madina Zongo Junction Traffic Light.
The arrest came to many people as a surprised development since people were caught unawares.
As at 8:30am today, about 70 people have been arrested, dumped into police pick up vehicles and whisked away to the Madina Police Station where they were locked up behind bars.
The development has generated serious tension within the area as many people who spoke to this reporter expressed anger saying that notices should have been placed on vantage position indicating that the bridge is ready for use.
“For me I know the bridge has not been commissioned and no information has been given as to when pedestrians can use it. So for the police to storm the area and be arresting people for not using the bridge is brutality and abuse of power,” a pedestrian said.
Other pedestrians who expressed anger noted that they travel from far communities to trade in the Madina Market and since they have no idea about the state of the footbridge, they thought of crossing the road when they were informed by other people around of the police presence and the operation.
“This is not good. This can only happen under Akufo-Addo, we are tired. If they want us to use the bridge, he (Akufo-Addo) and his ministers should come and commission it and officially open it for us to know,” another pedestrian said.
Meanwhile, the police personnel doing the arrest seemed unperturbed about the cries and the sentiments being expressed by the people.
