There is a seemingly tension brewing at the Northern Electricity Distribution company, NEDco in Tamale.
Workers are agitating over what they claim is government’s intention to facilitate the take over of NEDco by the Millennium Development Authority, MIDA.
Workers have tied up red flags and banners on the fences of VRA area office in Tamale. The actions of the workers symbolizes a solidarity for the Managing Director of NEDco, Mr. Frank Akliko.
Sources at NEDco say there is an ultimatum and intends pressure on the MD to sign the concessionaire document or be sacked by tomorrow Friday March 16, 2018.
MIDA is reported to have entered in to a $65.7 Million Dollars agreement deal with government that will see it take over NEDco, an agreement the staff are vehemently opposed.
Sources closer to the NEDco MD says Mr. Frank Akliko prefers to be fired than to sign the said concession agreement.
It is anticipated over 600 workers of NEDco will be lay off should the deal go through. The workers have since threatened they will embark on industrial action should government go ahead to fire their MD over the matter.
A meeting was held this morning by the senior staff group association of NEDco and the public service workers Union, PSWU of the trade Union Congress.
“At the said meeting it was agreed all staff of NEDco across Ghana will embark on industrial action. Our action is unanimous across NEDco” a senior staff member disclosed this on condition of anonymity.
NEDco’s operation covers the three regions of the North, Northern Volta, parts of the Brong Ahafo region and parts of Ashanti region.
