Athletico Madrid midfield Ghanaian midfielder Thormas Partey was named as the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Footballer of the year at the 43rd Awards ceremony which took place at the Accra International Conference Center on Friday.
The hard working star shook off competition from Richmond Boakye Yiadom, Daniel Nii Adjei of Raja Casablanca and Christian Atsu of Newcastle United to claim the finest footballer of the year in 2017 according to SWAG.
The former Almeria versatile anchor man enjoyed a remarkable campaign at the Wanda Metropolitano sports stadium to earn his place as one the continents finest midfielders. A perfect hatrick for the Black Stars away to Congo in the FIFA World Cup qualification campaign highlighted the international breakthrough of Partey as he continues to take the limelight away from his peers.
Partey shook off competition from Richmond Boakye of Yiadom Jiangsu Suning, Newcastle United’s Christian Atsu and Nii Adjei of TP Mazembe.
The Madrid based midfield icon who capped a remarkable 2018 European season with a place in the UEFA Europa league finals against Olympique Marseiles said he deserved the award.
Former Accra Hearts of Oak captain, Thomas Abbey also won the local Best Football Award. He had a wonderful seasn in the Ghana Premier League scoring some beautiful goals and also featuring for the loca Black Stars. He currently plays for Al Masry in Egypt.
