The UN-Habitat project in partnership with the People’s Dialogue (PD), Ghana federation of the Urban Poor (GHAFUP) and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (AshMA) are supporting some slum areas within of the Greater Accra Ashaiman municipality in the Greater Accra region to effectively prevent the spread of the Coronavirus d.ubbed, EMERGENCY WASH IN SLUMs AS A RAPID RESPONSE TO THE SPREAD OF COVID-19.
The project is a rapid response to the spread of COVID-19 in selected slums (based on a set of criteria) and aimed at enhancing community response to the pandemic through the installation of innovative handwashing facilities, PPEs, Hygiene, and Supplies.
The target communities are Ga Mashie in the Accra Metropolis, Tulaku in Ashaiman Municipality, and Sabon Zongo in the Ablekuma Central Municipality.
The support is anchored on the PD’s Community-Led Response to Management of Covid-19 (CLeRMoC-19) initiatives which serves as an interface between communities and various national interventions.

In Ashaiman, where The support to the identified slum areas within the Ashaiman municipality which are possible hotspots for COVID 19 such as Tulaku, Fitterline and parts of the Middle East were identified as hotspots for COVID 19 were selected.
These areas would see over 100 contactless, foot pedal enhanced handwashing facilities mounted across these areas including the development of Covid19 IEC education and campaign materials, disinfecting all public bathhouses and Toilets and distribution of provision of 1000 over four thousand nose masks and hundreds of other Personal Protective Equipment PPE.
The support would also include the disinfection of some 52 public bathhouses and 27 public toilet facilities identified by the locals themselves.
Public education and sensitization on COVID 19 would also be done as part of the support.
The Community-Led Response to Management of Covid-19 (CLeRMoC-19) ensures that members of these communities lead these support activities through a Community Coordinating Committee CCC.
So far, the CCC has been formed including subcommittee who are working to ensure that the project is successful.
Mapping of the community for strategic positioning of the hundred advanced hand washing facilities and installations have been done.
Education and sensitization including the disinfection of some public toilets facilities and bathhouses have also begun.
