The Ahafo Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Nana Adu Bonsu, has appealed to residents to remain vigilant and safety-conscious as the Christmas festivities coincide with the Harmattan season.
He explained that the Harmattan period is marked by dry and dusty winds, which significantly increase the risk of domestic fires, road accidents and other safety hazards. He therefore urged the general public to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property throughout the festive season.
Nana Adu Bonsu emphasized the careful use and regular inspection of cooking gas cylinders and other household appliances, particularly during food preparation for family gatherings and social events. He warned that negligence in handling cooking equipment is a major cause of fire outbreaks during the festive period.
He also cautioned commercial and private drivers to exercise patience and adhere strictly to traffic regulations. According to him, the increased movement of people during the Christmas season leads to heavy traffic on major roads, making it imperative for motorists to avoid over-speeding and reckless overtaking to prevent accidents.
“My humble plea to drivers is to drive cautiously and obey all traffic rules,” he said, stressing that responsible driving can save lives during the busy holiday period.
The NADMO Regional Director further advised organizers of Christmas events, concerts and social gatherings to put adequate safety measures in place. He warned against overcrowding at event venues, noting that excessive crowding can result in trampling, injuries and suffocation when people move uncontrollably.
In addition, farmers and hunters were cautioned against the use of fire during the Harmattan season. Nana Adu Bonsu explained that bush burning poses a serious threat to farms, residential communities and forest reserves, as fires can spread rapidly under dry weather conditions.
He concluded by encouraging the public to remain alert and to promptly report any potential hazards to relevant authorities, emphasizing that collective responsibility is essential to ensuring a safe and peaceful Christmas season in the Ahafo Region.
