The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman, Freeman Tsekpo, has assured traders at the Ashaiman Market that no market woman will lose her space following the planned redevelopment of the market.
The assurance comes amid agitations by market women after the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly announced plans to commence the redevelopment of the market. The project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign promise under the 24-Hour Economy Policy.
Mr. Tsekpo explained that the Assembly has no intention of displacing traders or taking away their livelihoods. According to him, alternative trading spaces will be provided to ensure business activities continue smoothly during the construction phase.
He disclosed that consultations with the market women will begin in the coming days to agree on suitable temporary locations before construction officially starts.
The MCE further emphasized that all traders will be reinstated after the redevelopment, dismissing reports that the new stalls would be allocated only to those who can afford to purchase them.
He also assured traders who operate table-top businesses—such as tomato sellers, charcoal dealers, and momoni sellers—that adequate open spaces will be provided for them in the redesigned market.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Hon. Ernest Norgbey, has appealed to the market women to remain calm and exercise patience, assuring them that the redevelopment is aimed at improving their welfare and business conditions.
