The District Chief Executive for Asene Manso Akroso District, Hon. Eric Ahinakwa, has advised lactating mothers to exclusively breastfeed their newborn babies for the first six months after delivery.
Speaking after donating essential items to nursing mothers, the DCE stated that exclusive breastfeeding reduces cost and also supports a child’s brain development.
According to him, children who receive exclusive breastfeeding do not fall sick easily and are very sharp mentally.
He noted that exclusive breastfeeding also helps children to develop well physically and emotionally.
Hon. Ahinakwa therefore encouraged all mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding for the health and wellbeing of their children.
The District Director of Health Mrs. Dorothy Ocansey also urged mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding, saying it helps prevent sickness in newborns and supports brain development.
She explained that exclusive breastfeeding also serves as a natural form of family planning and helps cut costs, since infant formula and other foods are expensive.
She further advised men to support their wives to enable them to breastfeed exclusively, and encouraged women to eat a balanced diet to ensure they get all the nutrients needed for themselves and their babies.
