The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has stated that Accra needs a comprehensive new urban transportation plan and not the Contra-Flow Initiative being implemented.
According to him, the Contra-Flow system is not sustainable and has the potential to worsen the passenger transportation system in the capital.
He proposes an 8-point alternative plan:
*1. 24-Hour Integrated Traffic Management System*
Build a modern, centralized traffic control centre to manage traffic lights, CCTV and flow across the city 24/7.
*2. Modernise and Expand Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)*
Invest in dedicated bus lanes, modern buses and regulated scheduling to make public transport efficient.
*3. Infrastructure Expansion*
Build more flyovers, underpasses, service roads and additional approaches to ease bottlenecks.
*4. Control Roadside Commercial Activities*
Regulate hawkers, traders and illegal parking that cause congestion on major corridors.
*5. Park and Ride Facilities*
Develop designated car parks at entry points to Accra to encourage private car owners to park and join regulated public transport.
*6. Full Traffic Enforcement*
Strict enforcement of traffic laws with technology and MTTD presence.
*7. Better Management of Commercial Vehicles*
Designate proper terminals and stopping points for trotros and long-distance vehicles.
*8. Alternative Transport Systems*
Introduce trams and other mass transit options in the most congested zones of the capital.
