The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has advised political parties in the country to do away with the situation where they lavishly spend the tax payers money on campaigns during election.
According to the NCCE, the situation where political parties sponsor their cronies during elections to contest for positions is an unhealthy development for the countries democracy. The Agona West Municipal Director of the Commission, Mr. Sekyi Sam who gave the advice in an interview with Ghananews247. com noted that democracy is about sharing of ideologies for the development of the people, and as such, every individual of sound mind must be encouraged to participate in the practice, and not only those affluent in society who have the financial muscle to influence the electorates.
According to him, this situation has led to the sidelining and marginalization of a particular group of people, particularly women, who form the majority of the population, but most of whom have not the financial strength to contest their male counterparts.
He pointed that women would be able to champion their course better if more of them are brought to the decision table through elections, and has therefore advocated for the encouragement of more women in the participation of local governance like the Assembly elections.
