As preparations for the election of Council of State members thickens, names have emerged.
Key amongst these personalities in the Northern Region is Col. Alhaji Mahamoud Tahiti (rtd.), the Zumg-Lana who has received several recommendations from opinion leaders and traditional leaders of the Northern Region tipped to be elected onto the Council.
It has emerged that six persons including Mr Abdul-Rashid Mohammed, a teacher; Zung-Lana Col. Alhaji Mahammud Tahiru (retd); Mr Abubakari Sadiq, businessman; Mr Ras Mubarak, immediate past MP for Kumbungu; Chief Alhassan Andani, former chief executive officer of Stanbic Bank and Mr Mahammud Alhassan, a farmer have expressed interest and some already filed their nominations to contest the upcoming Council of State elections.
However, information picked from the Region indicate that Zung Lana Col. Mahammud Tahiru has won the hearts of the majority for the position and people.
According to people interviewed ahead of the elections, they noted that Zung Lana Col. Mahammud Tahiru who has worked in the Military for 28 years is very disciplined, accessible, down-to-earth, truthful, development oriented and social with open-door policy.
They said although he retired from the service in 2016, he has continued to support the community and the region which for many of them, they admire so much about him.
According to the people, “It is better to be a silent lion than a popular sheep,” and urged for a massive endorsement for his bid.
His intentions to contest according to Northerners has come at a right time considering the caliber of person he is and how he can use his position to support the people of the Region.
So far, One hundred and two candidates from 16 regions had filed to contest the regional slots of the Council of State coming on February 12, 2021.
The Electoral Commission (EC) opened nominations for aspirants to pick up nomination forms on February 1 with a filing deadline of February 4, 2021, as part of processes for electing regional representatives to the Council.
