Chief Executive Officer of Special Group of Companies, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, has been spotted at the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) Grand Finale at the University of Ghana, Legon, where his alma mater, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), is seeking another historic national title.
Dr. Ofori Sarpong’s presence at the much anticipated academic contest underscores his longstanding connection with PRESEC and his commitment to supporting the school’s students as they compete on one of Ghana’s most prestigious academic platforms.
The business executive is a proud old student of PRESEC Legon and currently serves as Chairman of the school’s Governing Council, a position that places him at the centre of strategic discussions concerning the institution’s development, sustainability and long term educational ambitions.
Beyond his role on the Governing Council, Dr. Ofori Sarpong serves as Global President of the PRESEC Old Boys Association, popularly known as Ɔdadeɛ, where he has been associated with efforts to mobilise the school’s extensive alumni network towards institutional development.
His appearance at the NSMQ finale therefore carries significance beyond that of an alumnus attending an academic competition.
It also reflects a broader culture of alumni engagement in which former students continue to contribute their time, leadership, resources and influence to the advancement of their alma mater.
For PRESEC students competing on the national stage, the presence of a prominent alumnus and institutional leader provides an additional source of encouragement as they confront the pressure and expectations associated with the competition.
Dr. Ofori Sarpong’s commitment to the school has also been demonstrated through substantial investment in its physical infrastructure and learning environment.
In May 2026, he inaugurated and donated a 600 bed ultra modern dormitory to PRESEC Legon, named Ofori Sarpong House, as part of efforts to improve accommodation and enhance conditions for students.
The project represents one of the more visible examples of alumni supported infrastructure at the school and forms part of a wider contribution to PRESEC’s institutional development.
The NSMQ itself has become a defining feature of Ghana’s educational landscape, providing a national platform through which secondary school students demonstrate their abilities in science, mathematics, problem solving and teamwork.
For PRESEC, the competition has also become closely intertwined with the school’s national academic identity.
The Legon based institution won its first NSMQ championship in 1995, defeating Opoku Ware School in the final and announcing itself as a formidable force in the competition.
PRESEC subsequently returned to the summit in 2003 and won another championship in 2006 before producing a remarkable run of consecutive victories in 2008 and 2009.
The school’s dominance was interrupted for more than a decade before it reclaimed the national crown in 2020.
PRESEC added another title in 2022 and successfully defended the championship in 2023, taking its total number of national victories to eight.
Its eight championship years are 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2020, 2022 and 2023.
That record has established PRESEC Legon as the most successful school in the history of the NSMQ, placing considerable attention on its campaign for a ninth championship.
The 2026 finale consequently presents another opportunity for PRESEC to extend its remarkable legacy while reinforcing the competitive tradition that has made the NSMQ a major fixture on Ghana’s educational calendar.
The occasion has attracted several prominent personalities, including Education Minister and Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture and Ayawaso West Wuogon MP, John Dumelo.
Also present is Dr. Kweku Mensa-Bonsu, Founder and Chairman of Primetime Limited, the organisation responsible for the National Science and Maths Quiz.
The convergence of government officials, education stakeholders, school leaders, alumni and supporters reflects the national significance the competition has acquired since its establishment.
As the finalists battle for the coveted trophy, attention remains firmly focused on the students whose knowledge, composure and teamwork will ultimately determine the outcome.
For Dr. Ofori Sarpong, however, the occasion represents more than a contest for another trophy; it is also an opportunity to stand alongside the next generation of PRESEC students and demonstrate the enduring bond between an institution and its alumni.
