President John Dramani Mahama has referred a petition by the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) seeking the removal of the Shippers and Owners Association of Ghana (SOAAG) from the boards of two key maritime institutions to the Ministry of Transport for necessary action.
The petition concerns SOAAG’s representation on the boards of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
In a letter dated September 16, 2026, the Office of the President acknowledged receipt of a petition submitted by the IEAG on September 15, 2026, and indicated that the matter had been referred to the Ministry of Transport.
“I am directed to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 15th September, 2026, and to inform you that the petition has been duly noted and referred to the Ministry of Transport for necessary action,” the letter stated.
The response was signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, and addressed to Samson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Tema.
The presidential correspondence did not state the reasons advanced by the IEAG in its petition for seeking SOAAG’s removal from the two boards, nor did it indicate the specific action expected from the Transport Ministry.
It, however, confirms that the petition has been formally received by the Presidency and referred to the sector ministry for consideration.
The letter also conveyed the President’s “assurances of the highest consideration” to the petitioner.
The development puts the petition before the Ministry of Transport for further action.
