WE WILL ARREST AND PROSECUTE ANYBODY WHO POLLUTES THE AKORA RIVER— Chief warns.

The Nimfahen and Regent of Swedruman, Nana Kweku Essieni V has warned residents of the town that the Swedruman Council of Chiefs have put measures in place to arrest and prosecute anybody found polluting the Akora river.

The move, according to Nana Kweku Essieni, is being undertaken in collaboration with the Environmental Health Directorate of the Agona West Municipality.

According to him, what has necessitated the move is that they have identified that some individuals and homes, even including religious organizations have connected their sewages into drains that direct into the river, a situation he described as alarming, as it pollutes the river.

The Akora river, which runs through the middle of Swedru township served as the main source of water for the early settlers centuries ago, and continued to serve as the only source of water for surrounding communities, both far and near in times of water crisis in the area.

But human activities in the town now pose serious pollution threat to the river.

The Chief made this revelation during a clean-up exercise to clear the banks of the river of weeds as a means of protecting it.

He also assured that all the taboos, including not crossing the river on Wednesdays by any lady in her menstrual period as laid down by their ancestors are going to be enforced to ensure that it is strictly adhered to.

He later said the disregard for such taboos have led to people polluting the river.
