The Board Chairman of the Orange Growers Association, Mr. Nimo Ahenkrah, has urged the government to prioritize orange production as a major foreign export to generate more revenue.
Speaking to Oyerepa TV after the inauguration of the association’s new office in Akyem Oda, Mr. Nimo noted that Ghana has overlooked orange production for too long, and believes that making it a priority could lead to significant foreign exchange earnings.
He highlighted the challenges faced by orange growers, including post-harvest losses, infestation, diseases, unpredictable market conditions, low prices, and lack of government support, which has left many growers in poverty.
Mr. Nimo Ahenkrah emphasized the numerous benefits of oranges, including medicinal properties, and called on the government to invest more in the orange industry.
He encouraged everyone to consume oranges daily, citing their high vitamin C content and health benefits.
The President of the Orange Growers Association also encouraged young people to venture into orange farming, stressing that it is a lucrative business opportunity.
Obrempong Sintim Poku, the Benkuhene of Akyem Kotoku state, pledged to make land available for the Orange Growers Association, offering his support for the industry’s growth.
