Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary race in the Ashanti Region, according to the latest internal survey conducted by the party’s Constituency Research and Elections Officers. The survey, which covered all 47 constituencies in the region, shows Dr. Bawumia commanding an emphatic 71.8 per cent support among certified delegates ahead of the January 31, 2026 primaries.
The data-driven exercise, carried out between January 3 and 14, 2026, involved face-to-face engagements with delegates listed in the official voting register. Thirty-four out of the 47 Constituency Research Officers participated in the study, which followed extensive campaign tours by four of the aspirants, with Dr. Bawumia’s outreach largely led by his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia. The research, conducted with a 99 per cent confidence level and a margin of error of ±1.1 per cent, reflects months of direct interaction with party delegates across electoral areas and polling stations.
According to the aggregate findings, Dr. Bawumia enjoys a commanding lead far ahead of his closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who polled 11 per cent. Dr. Bryan Acheampong followed with four per cent, while Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum secured one per cent. Ing. Kwabena Agyepong registered no measurable support in the region. About nine per cent of delegates were undecided, with the remaining respondents either unavailable or classified under other categories.
A zonal breakdown of the results shows Dr. Bawumia consistently leading across all ten operational zones in the Ashanti Region, including Kumasi, Adansi, Atwima, Amansie, Afigya Kwabre, Asante Akim, Nsuta-Mampong, Sekyere-Kumawu and Ahafo Ano. In several constituencies, his support exceeded 80 per cent, underscoring his strong grassroots appeal within the party’s traditional stronghold.
The report, signed by the leadership of the Ashanti NPP Constituency Research Officers, notes that detailed constituency-by-constituency data, candidate performance analysis, and zonal results have been compiled into a full dataset with infographics to aid interpretation. The findings position Dr. Bawumia as the overwhelming favourite in the Ashanti Region as the NPP heads into its crucial presidential primaries.
