My Priority Is Promoting Child Education — Queen mother

The Tufuhemaa of Agona Nkum in the Central Region, Opuni-Qweiku Nana Yaa Nkumaa I has said child education remains her major priority, as that ensures the safety and wellbeing of the future of the next generation.

Speaking at a durbar to support school children of the town, she appealed to parents to see the education of their children as their major priority, and not sacrifice that at the altar of expensive funeral clothes and lavish lifestyle.

An ex-police officer, the queen mother, Opuni-Qweiku Nana Yaa Nkumaa assured that she will do whatever she can as a traditional ruler to protect the wellbeing of school children in her area.

The event was supported by Badua Foundation, a Ghanaian-based non governmental organization that supplies school children, particularly in the rural areas with teaching and learning kits such as writing materials, bags and other learning aids. According to the founder of the organization Miss Perpetual Bainson Frimpong, the vision of the NGO is to help every child have access to quality education, irrespective of their background.

She hinted that since its formation just over a year ago, the foundation has supported over two thousand school children in the area of supply of teaching and learning materials and other educational educational aids.

Addressing the gathering, the Mankrado of the town, Nana Mprah Afful V cautioned parents against giving their children, especially the girl-child in marriage.

He warned that that practice contravenes international laws on the violation of the rights of the child, and as such any parents found giving their child into early marriage would be dealt with according to laid down rules by the traditional authorities.

He also condemned the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in some cultures, describing it as inhumane and barbaric on the girl-child.
