The chiefs of Akyem Akyekrom have called on government to build a befitting classroom blocks for their community improve teaching and learning in the area.
According to Nananom, the current classroom blocks is detoriated and lacks many facilities that is making teaching and learning very difficult for both teachers and students. “It is sad to report that, the school has no toilet facility, ICT laboratory, staff common room, and Headmaster’s office”, a sub Chief lamented.
It was revealed that the Headmaster sits under a tree as his office which has been mocked as “office under tree” by passerbys.
The current weather conditions closes the school down for safety of the pupils.
Since they do not have a toilet facility in the school, anytime they want to visit nature’s call they go into the bush to ease themselves.
The Headmaster of the Akyekrom Presbyterian Basic School, Mr. Sylvanus Asigbey speaking to Oyerepa TV pleaded with the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and the District Assembly to come to their aid and build a befitting school block for them.
According to the Headmaster, He and the students lives in a dangerous environment as snakes intrude their improvised office and classrooms. He suggested that an ultramodern classroom will put them in a safer environment than what the have currently.
He expressed a serious concern that, the school has no single computer for them to use in teaching ICT especially for practicals. Apart from that, the entire Junior High School had only two teachers but unfortunately one has been transferred leaving only one teacher taking care of form one to form three in all the subjects which is not possible. Mr Asigbey said, he is helping in the teaching and learning but it’s still not enough as JHS teaching is usually subject based. He also disclosed that, He lives in single room where he receives his visitors and at the same time keeps the school’s teaching and learning materials. He said the diring situation makes teaching in the community uncomfortable and unfriendly and almost all teachers who comes into the community are unable to stay and teach.
He called on the MP to as a matter of urgency come to their aid to build a toilet facility for them as well as a new classroom block with offices and computers.
The Agona Abusuabaatan of Akyekrom, Opanin Kwabena Aseidu, adding to the conversation called on government to build for them a modern classroom so that their wards can also benefit from the 21st century education for their future.
According to him Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah brought cement bags meant for the building of the blocks but for unknown reasons it was taken away. He said, they are pleading with him to come and build the school for them so that it will enhance education in the town.
